Founded in 1907 Muskegon Rescue Mission is one of the oldest helping agencies in West Michigan. The Mission was first located on West Western in a building that was formerly the Crystal Theatre. The Mission moved to 400 W. Laketon in 1981 and to 1691 Peck Street in 1993.

Clients primarily come from the Muskegon County area. However, there are no geographic restrictions and people are referred from many Michigan communities each year.

Just as the agency name infers there are families, as well as individuals who literally need to be rescued from the lives of hopelessness. The MRM is a channel of Christian charity through which temporary shelter, meals, clothing, and discipleship is provided.

Today the MRM serves men, women, and children from all walks of life. The skid row derelict can find assistance recovering from drug addiction or alcoholism. The unwed teenage mother can find a home for the full term of her pregnancy. And the middle-class housewife will find temporary lodging for herself and her children during domestic strife.

The Department of Human Services, churches, community agencies, police, area businesses, and individuals frequently make referrals. Prospective clients are encouraged to visit the warm, clean facilities themselves, and may contact the MRM by phone at 231-727-6090.

In addition to temporary shelter, meals, and clothing, the MRM provides one-on-one assistance. Our women staff is trained to give personal attention to female clients who often come out of traumatic situations. Likewise men find a male staff member is always interested in offering Christian counsel. The program is tailored to the individual. For some it may be assistance in finding a home or apartment. For others the long term Christian Discipleship Program may be best.

A well-trained staff of eighteen provides the core of assistance. Staff are professionally trained and/or personally experienced. Some have degrees in social work and theology, while others have graduated from the Rescue Mission programs in other cities. Staff efforts are supplemented by area pastors and volunteers.

About 65% of our income comes from individuals…10% from businesses…10% from churches and the remainder from fund-raising events, grants, and bequests. All gifts are tax-deductible and subject to an annual audit by a certified public accountant.

The Mission is an autonomous Michigan non-profit corporation. The twelve-member Board of Directors are volunteers who are selected to represent a variety of denominational and vocational perspectives. The MRM has a policy of non-discrimination. Clients are accepted without discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, age, national origin, or handicaps to the extent facilities allow.
